Pitched Roof

Above is an example of an older pitched roof that we have recently replaced. The roof was more than 30 years old, and over time the tiles had begun to deteriorate. As the protective coating on older tiles wears away, the underlying steel becomes exposed, which can eventually lead to corrosion and rust.

When many park homes were originally built around 40 years ago, they were typically constructed with flat roofs. This design allowed very little space for adequate insulation or a sufficiently durable roof covering. As park home living grew in popularity—particularly as an attractive option for retirement—manufacturers began introducing pitched roofs. This development significantly improved both the comfort of park home living and the overall lifespan of the structure.

When we install a new roof, we construct it with a pitched design. This creates additional space for insulation and improved airflow. In many cases, depending on the condition of the existing roof, the new structure can be built directly over the original roof. Typically, the only materials separating the old roof from the new one are the original felt, boarding, and ceiling boards.

Added Roof Space for Insulation

The added roof space allows us to install insulation in a similar way to a traditional loft in a house. Proper airflow is still maintained so the roof can “breathe,” while the insulation forms an effective thermal barrier. This not only improves warmth inside the home but also reduces external noise. By raising the roof to a pitched design, noise from heavy rain and birds—particularly seagulls in coastal areas—is significantly reduced compared with a flat roof.

Insulation also helps keep the interior cooler during the summer months, as it works to regulate temperature in both directions. For this reason, we use specialist lightweight tiles, which are approximately one-seventh of the weight of conventional house tiles and are specifically designed for park homes.
